Our Donations program is similar to those of the Goodwill and Salvation Army but because we don’t have any inventory limitations (we’ve got plenty of internet space!) we’re able to return TWICE as many clothing items back to the US circular secondhand economy. According to the Council for Textile Recycling, only 10-20% of clothing donated to charitable clothing companies is resold back into the community. If you’re not sure what a circular secondhand economy means, you’re not alone. It’s a simple concept: reuse or recycle everything by keeping products and materials in use. Selling or donating one clothing item extends its life by an average of 2.2 years and reduces its carbon, waste and water footprints by 73%. That is what we like to call, making a difference.

So, what kind of items should you send in a Donation Clean Out Bag? We accept all women’s, men’s, and kids’ clothing, handbags, shoes, and accessories. We aren’t as strict with the quality guidelines as we are with our standard Clean Out Bags, but the better the items are, the higher the chance of your items getting a second life in someone else’s closet.

Cleaning out for the whole family has never been easier, plus you get a donation tax receipt where you can declare the value of the items donated AND we give our charitable partners a cash donation for every received. Triple winning, people!

Our main goal and priority at thredUP is to ensure that as many items as possible are given a second life and stay out of landfill. Used garments that don’t meet thredUP’s strict quality guidelines for resale are evaluated for inclusion in our Reject Rescue program. Sometimes all an item needs is a little TLC. All remaining donation items are reused or responsibly recycled.  

How It Works

1. Click here to order a FREE Donation Clean Out Kit. From there, you’ll be prompted to choose a charity you’d like to support. Even when we are unable to fulfill standard kit requests (due to overwhelming demand), donation kits are always available.
2. We’ll send you a FREE Donation Clean Out Kit with a pre-paid shipping label or you can print a label and ship using your own box. Don’t forget to keep an itemized list of what you send in with their estimated values. You’ll need this information to fill out your tax donation receipt.
3.  Within one week of your bag being received, you will receive a tax donation receipt via email. Neither thredUP or the Charity partner can assign value to your donations. Please refer to IRS regulations pertaining tax deductibility for your donations.
